SuperDuper! doesn't support optical media, no, so that won't work. You can use BootCD (see VersionTracker) to create a bootable CD, though.
You don't have to open your external FireWire disk. Instead, you can copy to it, rename it to the same as the source drive, start up from it, replace the internal drive (do not erase it in case you have a problem), then copy back.
