This is due to a bug in OSX 10.4.8. To work around the problem, restart your MacBook Pro. Then, run a full backup, but don't do anything else, and Hide SD! during the backup (with Cmd+H).

Once that's done, subsequent Smart Update should be fine. We're hopeful the bug will be fixed in 10.4.9...
