I'm sure you received an error indicating that the destination volume was disconnected unexpectedly... because the destination failed.

Use Finder's "Go To Folder" command to open

/Volumes

Once there look for a folder (not a link/alias) with the name of the destination. Delete that folder and empty your trash and your space will return.
