No, the image is not created on the desktop. The 'disk image' appears on the desktop because 'drives' appear there. But the image is stored where you store it - and that should be on the NAS.

This is covered in quite a bit of detail in the User's Guide and the "Airport Disks" post at the Shirt Pocket blog (in general terms).
