The only reason to disconnect a copy -- and it's not a bad one -- is to let the backup spin down and rest. Apart from that, I can't see why you would need to disconnect it during any other operations: it's just a drive.
What, exactly, are you concerned about? Did you read somewhere that this was a good practice?
