"T" doesn't boot from the drive, Anne. It just starts in FireWire target disk mode. (The logo you see is the FireWire logo.)

Assuming the drive is properly partitioned (check in Disk Utility -- when you select the drive it should say "GUID" under Partition Scheme for an Intel Mac, or "Apple Partition Map" for a Power PC Mac), you can hold down Option when starting and choose the drive. You can also pick it in the Startup Disk preference pane.
