If the drive unmounted, your Mac isn't running properly. The external drive, or the internal FireWire subsystem, is failing.

What I'd do is resolve the DVD boot problem with Apple. No need to mention the whole backup thing -- just focus on their explicit responsibility: your computer won't boot from the DVD without crashing.
