Although you can't back up from an Airport Disk, we certainly do support them, but only through an image. There's no plan to change this -- please see the "Airport Disks" post at
http://www.shirt-pocket.com/blog for the reason, which is difficult to get around.
Data Backup can only back up to these disks by either not really backing up the metadata or using its own storage format...
