Network Backup to Image Over Wifi

I'm backing up my wife's new MacBook using SD Smart Backup each night. As I've read here in other posts, many people including myself experience a very long wait for the sparseimage to mount before the actual backup of files begins. On average it takes my wife's MacBook about 45 minutes to mount the image (this is over a 802.11b router) and more time to back up the data. Her 120gb drive has about 55gb of data on it.

I have 2 questions:

How much can I reduce the amount of mounting time by using a faster network (802.11n for example)?

Can I avoid the image mounting if I were to have her backup directly to the network drive and not use a sparseimage? Is this recommended?

I'm a huge SD fan. I recommend it to many friends and will continue to. Thanks for a great product at a reasonable price.

Matt
