You wouldn't share a volume, no - you'd simply create another APFS volume in the same container. You'd probably want to set a reserve, though, or the TM volume would take over the entire container.

No, SuperDuper cannot currently be used to back up a startup drive. I do not have a timeline for you; as I've said elsewhere, we're gated on factors that aren't under my direct control.

I have seen USB3 drives have problems with USB2 Macs, though. The fix there is almost always to use a USB2...
