dnanian, many thanks for quick reply. Very sad indeed as i like the drive very much. Looks like I have to complete erase the drive and return to the retailer.

Dave, many thx for your reply. Good advise on the Time Machine - at some point I will definitely upgrade to Leopard i'll get the most storage i can afford.
