In this case, when you boot from the new SSD if it has 10.14 on it, it'll prompt to restore. Just point that at the backup and it'll bring in your applications and data.

I would format the external as APFS if the source is APFS.

SuperDuper won't "register" for notifications until it has notified. So you have to quit Growl to get us to notify. We definitely do notify with the notifications center as long as Growl isn't...
