Thanks Dave. It's a very old drive, so this would not be surprising by any means and it's making a soft clicking noise fairly regularly now, so looks like it's time to get a replacement.

Thanks Dave, that's reassuring to know. Presumably that same data could be used to newly upload messages if there was some sort of disaster, such as a hard drive failure on the IMAP server.
