If you can attach both to the same Mac, you'll be able to go direct-to-direct, which will make things significantly faster. That's probably what I'd do.

Well, that's because you're using Smart Update, so it's skipping a lot of files to start with... it's going to slow down when you get to the point where data's actually being copied.

Stopping the copy should not leave an image unmountable/unusable, unless the image is already...
