A container is kind of like a "bucket" that holds space that is allocated to volumes. If you look in Disk Utility and choose View > Show All Devices, you'll see the container listed below...

Nothing. It's a bug in macOS. Try Option+Power On and see if it's there (it should be).

You'll see when you boot from the external that the internal is missing from the startup disk preference...

I don't know of any virus for the Mac that runs "on mount", and if you're not booting from this drive, or launching any application from it, I can't see how you could be infected by copying it.

This is a weird bug in Time Machine when it sees that we've mounted Recovery at the same time it wants to. Rather than waiting for the volume to unmount, it throws an error.
