OK thanks David, it looks like I may have actually downloaded B5.1, not sure it's hard to tell with them having the same version numbers, or do they? Mine is currently 99.5 at any rate it all looks...

I have just discovered when trying to set up a new clone after converting to APFS that there was not source volume to clone, I assume this is because V2.9.2 cannot see APFS.
So I have no choice...

OK that did not work, installed over the top of the clone OK, and fortunately the clone still mounts so no data is lost, but I get the same screen when I try to boot from it.

Hello,
I just did an erase and clean install of El Capitan, before I did that I smart updated two bootable clones. When I'm in El Capitan, the Clones mount OK and I can access all the files.

Superduper as an ordinary file backup
I have always used superduper to make a complete bootable clone, however I wonder if the use I am now making of it is a good idea or not.
