Backup All Files to HDD without erasing?

Hi. I downloaded SuperDuper to clone my mac disk to my external, format the mac, make two partitions (one for bootcamp and one for mac), and put everything back on the mac partition.

However, I have a lot of content still on my external drive that I want to keep. When I go to make a clone in SuperDuper, I can't find a way to backup without erasing all contents of my external.

What should I do? Is there a way to make a backup onto my external HDD without erasing the files I keep on there?

The reason I am doing this is because my disk is highly fragmented, and even though I have enough free space on my mac drive to make a partition (53gb), Boot Camp Assistant isn't letting me make a partition. I read that cloning my mac drive, formatting, and restoring will bring the contents back to my mac drive without fragmentation, allowing me to partition properly.

Thanks to everyone for any help.

Use a disk image - see "Storing a backup alongside other files on a destination drive" linked from page one of the User's Guide (Help > User's Guide).

However, in most cases I would strongly encourage you to create a directly bootable backup... or use iPartition to create the partition without erasing.
