G3 backup for Macbook User files

I recently replaced the HD on a g3 slot loading imac and partitioned the drive to use it for cloning the g3 and storage for a new macbook.

I want to back up the user folder of the macbook. Are there any issues in doing this since the g3 is Apple partition mapped and the macbook is GUID? I am not interested in cloning the macbook here just backing up the user folder.

Would I be able to replace files on the macbook with files from the g3?

I was going to do this with the g3 in target disc mode.

Thanks

No real issues copying the user folder, no. Not quite sure what you mean by "replace files on the MacBook..." -- could you explain?

You might be better off with a real external drive, which is in a cooler, less fragile environment...

First, I have the Macbook and g3 cloned elsewhere on an external drive. There is no risk to me if anything happens to either of these macs as a result of me just tinkering.

That said, if I have files on the g3 (from the macbook user folder) that I might want to replace on the macbook, like documents, itunes music files, photos... would I be able to drag them over to the macbook and simply replace those files on the macbook or add files from the g3 macbook partition to the macbook if I wanted.

On the g3 I am specifically using a partition that is entirely the user folder of the macbook. Might have an older Excel document on the g3 that I would want to substitute for the same named file on the macbook that is a newer file.

I don't see why not, though I don't know if both partitions will be available in Target mode.
