Filevault protection

Was thinking about the dangers of using filevault. Specifically, harddrive failure and being unable to access my encrypted data.

Could I work around this potential obstacle by backing up with filevault open?

I know that it has been posted a number of times that it is better to create a nonFV account and backup from there to ensure a clean backup.

But what happens if there is something wrong with my home folder (filevaulted) and my backup gets corrupted when I run SuperDuper?

I am concerned both my harddrive and backup become inaccessible at the same time.

What about backing up while filevault is open to something like a Rocstor harddrive? The Rocstor drive is encrypted so the backup is not vulnerable.

Any suggestions or clarity on this?

Just wish security was more simple or better yet unnecessary. :)

There's another thread that just came up in the last day or so that provides a solution: if you used the special volume the FileVault volume "exposes" as the source for the backup (it'll be in the source pop-up when you're logged into your account), you can back that up to the Rocstor.

Hi Dave,

Sorry I missed that. I thought I read everything on FileVault.

Not sure I understand what you mean by special volume exposed by FileVault. Could you redirect me to that thread?

Thanks,
brent
