Help! Files are corrupt.

Hello.

I back-up my files with SD! from my mac onto a snap server.

Recently, my hard drive began making the notorious scratching sound, and had to be replaced.

Luckily, I had all my files backed-up on the snap server.
But, when I went to open them, the appear to be corrupted.
I have 4 GB of backed-up files that are have the label "BU.sparseimage"

I can see the files....their icons, size, created & modified date.
But, when I go to open them, I get the following messages:

Cannot open file. Adobe InDesign may not support file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application.

OR

Acrobat could not open (file name) because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

(Some of the Illustrator files will open, but the documents do not contain any information.)

I have tried dragging the files to the proper application, as well as trying to open them on another computer.

Is there a way to salvage these files?
It seems like there should be a way to access the files, since I can see them and they are taking up disk space.

Or, are they corrupted beyond recognition?

Thanks!

Does your SnapServer properly support files larger than 4GB, Joy? As I explain in the User's Guide, the network drive MUST support large files, or you can encounter a catastrophic failure...

I believe so. A few months ago, I was able to retrieve backed-up files without any problem.

If the server does have size limitations, would that cause files to become corrupt?

Once a file is corrupt, is it ruined forever?

The files would become corrupt because the image would try to expand larger than the total file size possible on the snap server. That would then cause the data in the image to become damaged. I warn about it strongly in the User's Guide because the OS doesn't always notify about this situation, and can both silently corrupt files or even crash your Mac.

Depending on what's gone on here, if the files are truly corrupt they are not likely recoverable.

Is the size of the image file 4GB?
