Maxtor One Touch Plus 4 not found

Set up new 750 gb drive with 2 partitions, both appear on desktop, tried sd twice, first time, nothing happened, 2nd time, super duper failed to find either partition. It had, apparently, been searching for the 2nd one all night so I looked at the log and quit superduper. Now, I can no longer view the log but the schedule items are red. I did contact SuperDuper support the first time backup failed and confirmed that I set the drive up correctly. Can't find anything on the maxtor website so think it might be better to return this drive and try something else unless someone can suggest a solution.
Mac OS 10.4.11, Powermac G5, 2.3

Thank you for any help.
Randall

It sounds to me like the drive isn't working properly, Randall. What happens if you restart the Mac?

Randall 01-20-2009 05:04 PM

Restarted Maxtor, ran copy

(I am never sure if I'm replying correctly--sorry if it's not)

thank you for your response. I restarted the computer, clicked copy now but did not edit schedule. Both partitions seem to have everything copied but the schedule is still red and I can't see the log unless I view it in the menu where it looks the way I think it should since it says copy complete at the end. The schedule shows that super duper ran and that it will run again next week. I tried restarting the computer again but that had no effect on the red schedule.

Thanks.
Randall

Delete the red schedule entries. Recreate them, and set the time to a few minutes from now. Then wait to see if it runs as expected.

Thanks--that solved that problem however, a target drive and destination partition don't match. The target drive has 250gb and the destination partition has 168gb. A few days ago, I found about 100gb duplicate files on my destination drive and put them in the trash. From what I can tell, a folder trash exists on Mac HD and on lacie 500 gb external drive but not on the Maxtor partition for the Lacie external drive. Maybe that's the way it should be?

I appreciate the help.

Use Finder's Go To Folder command to open

/Volumes

on the source. Any folders in there (not aliases or links)?

When my back up drive must have been failing, my Mac HD mysteriously gained many GB after SD ran so I moved a lot of folders(images only) to my external drive to free up space. At that time, I never thought of looking for duplicates. Then, I made a mistake and had sd copy from Mac HD to my external, not the back up, emailed SD for help and clicked "STOP". After that, I found duplicate files of all kinds on my external drive and placed them in the trash. I assume that is because of the aborted copy. SD told me to follow the above instructions but I don't know what I'm supposed to type in the box. Also, I believe the back up drive was failing for weeks(I schedule SD once/week) and am afraid thousands of image files may well be damaged so that's why I don't throw out the trash.

Sorry for this lengthy correspondence--I can't believe you are willing to take the time to help me. thanks very much. Randall

I'm not sure I follow what you've done here, but if you deleted files from an external drive, the trash is on the external drive, not the internal. And files on the external would not be counted in the size calculation for the internal.

The Lacie drive holds only files, no apps since I use it to add images. the maxtor is the bootable drive with 2 partitions.

Here is that part of the log. I see that it "ignores" trashes. What I don't understand is why the back up drive has only 168gb since there are 250 on the Lacie drive. sorry this is so confusing. Randall

It only ignore some trashes. Assuming you're using "Backup - all files", I don't know, and would have to see the entire log. It copied everything that was appropriate/selected...

OK. That certainly indicates that the 'missing' files are in the trash.

Yes, that's by design. If you want the files in the trash, you should take them out of the trash.

(you mean if I don't want the files in the trash?)

So even though I don't see the .trash files('hidden' files?) anywhere but the Mac HD, and even though the only way I know to put things in the trash is through the dock icon, those files are copied by sd but hidden and reside on the back up drives or do they reside on the back up drives only if and when I remove them from the trash?

Whatever the location of those files, if I choose to delete them, does that affect the original folders and applications? (these include users)

Thanks, again. and again.
