Backup Stalls or is super slow

I am having a problem with my iMac i7 and SuperDuper. I am backing up the internal HD to an external 1TB drive. I tried USB and firewire and neither have completed the backup in a 18 hour period. By the statistics it looks like it stalls about a quarter of the way through the smart backup. I have repartitioned the HD, tried a different HD and the results are always the same. No completed backup. It would be a 600GB backup. Any suggestions? How long should an initial backup take in this size range?

For me, a 600GB backup (internal MacBook Pro drive to 2.5" external USB2) would take 10-11 hours ....
