Backup to a network mounted volume

It would be nice (and useful) to be able to at least do a "smart update" to a network mounted volume. Scenario: I connect a drive locally for the first backup. I then put the drive somewhere on my network accessible via some sharing protocol (personal file sharing, windows file sharing, ftp, ssh/sftp, something). I schedule SD! to mount the drive (possibly supplying a required userid and password) and do a smart update to the network mounted volume, and then unmount the volume and quit SD!

If the volume runs the risk of not being a bootable volume when connected locally after having a few smart updates via network, then fine. Warn me of this. I might still use this to keep a "very up to date" (say, every 4 hours) version of my home directory at least. It would be nice to have SD! run through my steps above every 4 hours (of course, if the volume is not mounted SD! should quit quietly and note that in a log somewhere so I know when the last backup really did occur).

Perhaps it would be nice, but unfortunately it's not as easy as it maybe seems. Specifically, authorizing to write files across a network connection that are not owned by the user authorized against the share are rather iffy. It's not just a matter of it being bootable -- it's a matter of being able to write at all...

The sparse image solution works quite well... have you tried it?
