Possible new feature: reclaim disk image storage?

I just read in October MacWorld (p. 88) that sparse image files grow as needed, but they don't shrink when files are deleted. You have to use the hdiutil command in Terminal to reclaim the space.

Maybe this could be a nice "post-backup" option for SD!

Also, I'd still like to see SD! be more intelligent about displaying disk space usage during backup. From my email of a few months ago:

-------------------------------------------------------------------

As my backup image gets closer to getting full, the need for this feature becomes more pressing: Presently, SD! reports (I forget exact words) "xxx GB evaluated, yyy GB already up to date, zzz GB written."

Well, a lot of those zzz GB written are REPLACING obsolete files in the backup image. So they're not really consuming additional disk space.

I'd REALLY like a report that said something like:
"xxx GB evaluated, yyy GB already up to date, zzz GB old files replaced, qqq GB new files added"

This would give me a much better idea of how much I need to worry about my backup drive filling up.

I'm not sure how this is of benefit: doesn't just looking at the total of the files copied tell you what you need to know?
