backup via USB/boot via firewire?

I'd like to perform routine backups of a Mac G4 over an airport extreme hooked to a WD drive via UBS. If I do that, can I boot back to the Mac if necessary with a direct firewire connection to the WD drive?

No, that can't be done: backing up over a network requires the use of an image, which cannot be directly booted from.
