System Crash - Maxtor One Touch and SuperDuper

Trying SuperDuper for the first time and while backing up to my external firewire Maxtor One Touch I got about 1/12 of the way through backing up my entire harddrive when I got the "grey screen of death" (like the blue screen of death for Windows).

Reading through this forum on other "system or kernal panics" I did the following:
-installed and ran disk warrior to verify drive
-installed and ran memtest 3 times to verify memory validity
-repaired permissions
-rebooted and tried again

Same grey screen of death (please restart your Mac...)

So here is the log file (panic.log) that you requested from another user and I am hoping it will provide info to help me get beyond this point as your software appears to work for so many others:

OK, Nick. The problem here is that the file system is corrupted in a way that's causing the kernel to throw up its hands and panic.

What I'd do is boot from your Tiger DVD and run Disk Utility from the Installer menu. Use that to repair the disk structure, NOT its permissions. Repeat that until it indicates everything's OK, then boot back to the drive and try the backup again.

Thanks for the very quick reply. I will do as you suggest later this afternoon when I return home, however if I ran Disk Warrior already would that not accomplish the same thing?

Again, will do as you suggest, just curious if it is redundant.

Will check back in...

Disk Warrior *should* have done the same thing, or similar, but it's worth a try with Disk Utility, too.

The problem is definitely a low-level drive issue, though.

Well seems like a small step in the right direction. Did the disk repair from a boot to the system CD and this time no panic. However SuperDuper did quit with this message:

Any ideas? To my untrained eye it appears to be something with Keynote which is a copy I have not even opened yet (at least not started the trial phase.)

Indeed, it may, to the untrained eye... ;)

To me, it looks like your backup drive is formatted for DOS/Windows, as FAT32. That file system has a 4gb limit per file, and your image probably went over it.

To fix, use Disk Utility to erase, using the "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" format. Then, try again. Note that it's best to back up directly to the drive, rather than to an image...

nickcollision 08-31-2005 11:33 PM

That appears to have done it. Really I had hoped to be able to back up some existing Windows laptops on that external Maxtor Firewire drive as well. Now that it is formatted for Mac Journalled will that be impossible?

(Will try to run it again to be sure it is working properly.)

The Windows machines won't recognize the drive when it's attached directly, Nick. But, you can use Windows File Sharing to expose the drive to them, and OSX will automatically make it look like Windows to your clients.

nickcollision 09-01-2005 10:05 AM

Thanks for the prompt assistance, Dave. Well done!

dnanian 09-01-2005 10:25 AM

No problem at all, Nick. Thanks for stopping by.
