Copy good, image bad.

We just tried to make a smart copy and image. It made the copy OK, but then it couldn't find it and failed making the image. Here is from the log:

Quote:

| 10:51:31 PM | Info | created: /Volumes/Storage/OS X Backup Image.sparseimage.dmg
| 10:51:31 PM | Info | ......COMMAND => Changing permissions for /Volumes/Storage/OS X Backup Image.sparseimage to group read and write
| 10:51:31 PM | Error | chmod: /Volumes/Storage/OS X Backup Image.sparseimage: No such file or directory
What would cause this?

We also tried to manually make a disk image, both times didn't work. The first time it froze up after 3 hours. The second time it said that there was no space on the hard drive, even though there was well over 60 gigs available.

Hi, MMM. You tried to create an image of your image? I'm confused -- please send the entire log into the support email address, and I'll take a look.

No, we set it to make a backup (which it did) and then after it was done with that it was to make an image (Options > Advanced > Create Image of Back up). We'll send you the log file.

We made the partition bigger, and that 'seems' to have fixed it.

We did have one more question thought, what is the difference between a

Backup Image.sparseimage

and a

Backup Image.sparseimage.dmg.

It appears to making both. Do we need them both?

A sparse image is a read/write image that only takes up about as much space as the data.

A DMG is a read-only image that can't be updated once created.

When we create a DMG, we start with a sparse image, then convert that to read-only. That ensures it's as small as possible.
