I just moved over to Macintosh's world a few days ago.

I heard very good comments about SuperDuper! and I have some questions about how I can use this application before buying it.

In the Windows's word , I used 2 externals hards disks: one for my data and the other one for my backups. I do not want to keep data on the internal drive of my computer. I used a program of backup (image) which enabled me to make an image of the disc of my computer (internal drive) and another image of my disc of data (external drive). These two images were on my second external hard disk. The image of my internal disc was done manually, the image of my data was updated each evening.

I would like to keep this structure with my new Mac and my two externals drives while also using Time Machine. Is this possible? If so, which are the stages which I must follow (and in which order) to ensure that it will be possible to properly boot from my external drive with SuperDuper if necessary ?

Also, do I have to partition the external disc (backup), in how much part?

Well, you'd partition the "backup" drive into two volumes, one for the internal drive and one for the data drive. Those partitions should be HFS+ (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)), and the partiiton scheme should be GUID. There are various partitioning instructions on the forum, so take a look.

If you want the same drive to contain Time Machine backups too, create a third partition for TM.

Each partition should be roughly the same size as the source volume it's backing up, with the TM partition being the rest.

Finally - are you sure you want to leave data off the internal drive? This seems to be a bit of a worry about having to "nuke and pave" the way one has to do on Windows all the time, and the way one almost never has to do on the Mac. You can even install a clean copy of the OS under your existing data. Storing everything externally is pretty much unnecessary, unless you have a great reason to do so.
