Target image size

Hi, I'm making automatic backups every day of my PowerBook over a network. The target image is on a Firwire disk (a LaCie Porsche HD by the way) attached to an iBook. I use the "Backup - all files" script with the SmartUpdate option. Everything works fine, I'm very happy with SuperDuper!

However, I noticed that the size of the image is pretty big. Right now, the size of the image is 91Gb and my disk shows that only 57Gb are used (and 35 are available). If I mount the image, the content is exactely the same as on my original disk. Where do the additional 34Gb on the image come from? Is there anything I'm doing wrong?

Thanks for your help.

You're not doing anything wrong: Apple's image handling doesn't always make good use of the freed space in an image.

You can recover the space, though, using a command-line tool. Open terminal and type

hdiutil compact

Make sure there's a space after "compact". Then, drag the image file from Finder into Terminal. That'll enter its path.

Press Return, and -- after a time, it'll shrink the image down.

Hope that helps!
