WD Drive will not boot after 10.6.3 update

After updating my Intel iMac and unibody MBP to 10.6.3, my WD MyStudio HD does not boot from the SuperDuper Clone on either machine. I've tried booting using the 800 FW and the USB 2.0 connectors. Each time, grey screen appears with the spinning gear, however, nothing occurs beyond this point.

I have cloned (smart backup) the drive again thinking it might have been a faulty backup. No problems evident during the SD clone. All green at the end. However, still cannot boot. Also, the drive is partitioned with the 2nd partition used for Time Machine. No problem with a TM backup.

The WD mounts on the Desktop. I can see the various folders, files etc.

Appreciate any help/guidance. thanks

Question - how do I update my Signature???

Does it work in 'safe boot' - that is, hold down shift from startup to the desktop?

Hi Dave

Does not boot in safe mode either.

Either safe mode or regular strart-up: when the computer restarts the drive makes all the right activity sounds in the early boot stage. However, when the spinning gear appears on the initial grey screen, the drive goes silent as the gear just spins and spins....

Try updating the backup with Smart Update, renaming it to the same name as the source drive, then starting up from it.

Hi Dave

I have been using Smart Update.

Per your suggestion: via the Finder, I renamed the cloned HD to the same name as my internal HD. Restarted the computer, holding down the option key, and selected the clone (tricky figuring out which one was the clone as both now have the same name). Spinning gears and nothing else.

Powered off/restarted to the internal - no problem restarting.

Not quite sure what to suggest here. Perhaps an erase then copy to clear the drive just to see if it makes a difference (it shouldn't)...

Before I erase the partition and reclone, wondering if you suspect this is a possible problem with how the 10.6.3 restart sequence works compared to how 10.6.2 restart sequence functioned?

dnanian 04-16-2010 04:50 PM

Not that I am aware of. I'm having no problems here.

I'll reclone the drive and report back. thanks

Hi Dave

Erased/reclonned the partition. Drive now boots w/o issue. Don't know what to say except "alleluia". :)

That's not the word that comes to mind here, but I'm glad it's working!
