SmartUpdate Question

When I run the SmartUpdate script, I've noticed that files that I've deleted on my G5 are not deleted on my target firewire.

For example, two podcasts remain on the target firewire drive that are not on my G5 boot drive.

I restarted Finder to verify that it was not a 'refresh' problem. Any suggestions what I might check. Thanks!!

No, I've never heard of Smart Updating doing something wrong like that, Steve. Are you absolutely certain you're using Smart Update as the During Copy method? (It's not a script...)

SteveL 05-29-2006 12:55 PM

I wonder if the podcasts are still on my G5 and I can't see them in Finder, but on the Firewire drive, they are visible. I am not sure how to check.

Unlikely, Steve: they'd be in the same folder on both the source and destination drives.

Are you certain you're Smart Updating and you're looking at the same folders on both source and destination?

I'm pretty sure. I tried it again as follows:

Copy Macintosh HD to LaCie Disk 3
using Backup - user files

Options:
During copy: Smart Update LaCie Disk 3 from Macintosh HD.
---------

I've run this twice now and the old podcasts on the 'LaCie Disk 3' are still there, even though they have been deleted from 'Macintosh HD.'

Thanks for your help. I'm new at this, so I could be doing something stupidly wrong.

OK, Steve. Please send me, through the support email address, the log from this most recent run. I'd like to see what's going on.

Just one thought -- when you delete a track in iTunes, it also asks whether you want to move the file to the Trash or let it remain on your HD. So to be sure the podcasts are off your HD, you have to check using the Finder and not just iTunes.

Chris, thanks for the suggestion. I let iTunes manage my podcasts; they are moved off the hard drive automatically (as verified by Finder). Just for the record, the service here at "Shirt Pocket Discussions" is just short of miraculous. Dave has been working with me to figure this out 24/7. I have no idea why anyone would use anything to back up a Mac other than SD!
