Backup won't boot
 

Hi.
I used the backup all function to backup my main hard drive to a secondary internal hard drive.
I want to be able to have a bootable backup.
When I use the option key to boot, I only see the main hard drive.
What am I doing wrong?

You'll have to excuse the series of questions, dgough, but I don't have a lot to work on here. So...

Can you describe your machine a bit more?
Did you install the 2nd drive yourself? Did you use cable select?
When you backed up the drive, did you write directly to the 2nd drive or to an image?
If you install OSX directly to the 2nd drive, does it show up in Option-boot?

It's a G4 Dual Audio with a 1.8 mhz processor upgrade from OWC. Running 10.4.2.
I put the 2nd drive in myself. Not sure what you mean by cable select but it was designated a slave. (Don't think I was given an option to have 2 masters).
Haven't tried to install 10.4.2 on the slave yet but did have 10.2.8 on it previously and wasn't able to boot to it but it did show up during option boot.
I wrote directly to the drive.
Would it be easier to just use an external? I was thinking of getting another anyway.

OK, that all sounds reasonable -- although I don't have direct experience with a Dual Audio machine, I assume (and it may be a bad assumption) that it supports booting from the 2nd internal. That said, you've never had it work that way, and if plain OSX wouldn't do so, SD! definitely won't.

Why Open Firmware won't show it, though, I don't know. If, at the end of the log, you can see we successfully blessed the drive, it really should show up -- that's purely an Open Firmware feature, and if the drive is behaving properly, it should be in the list.

You can try using an external, but it's important to ensure that the case you choose supports Mac boot. OWC, LaCie and WiebeTech drives definitely do. Others might, but often don't, so be aware!

First, though, I'd try installing Tiger on it, and see if you can get that to boot...

I erased the drive with Disk Utility and installed Tiger on it. It still won't show up under an option boot. So, I guess it won't work with this internal. (At least in this configuration.)
