File Vault - one file so always takes forever?

I'm using File Vault on my home directory, and I think it's got 122GB in it. I ran SD for hours last night and it seemed stuck - from what I've read here it's because it's copying such a huge file.

My question is - does that mean every single time I change one thing inside that encrypted home directory, SD will insist on copying the whole darn thing because the sparse image is all it can see? If so, then my requirement to have File Vault (employer imposed) renders SD virtually useless to me because I know I won't wait hours and hours every week to do incremental backups.

Please tell me there's something else I can do?

That's the way FileVault works, Allison. If you want to back up just the changes, you can back up your user files separately. Use "Backup - all files", and select the FileVault volume from the source pop-up (it'll be a volume with your account name).

I had erased my backup drive entirely since it hung last nite around 190K files evaluated, and restarted it this morning from scratch.

It's been running for 5 hours now, and it says: 198K of 379K files evaluated. 13GB evaluated, 0MB up to date, 122MB copied.

finally killed it.

trying your idea now - I think that's actually what I was looking for because now I can exclude folders like my 10GB of podcasts I can easily recreate. It seems to be running much more normally now, (like the amount evaluated = amount copied). thanks for the help!
