Can't clone back from backup

I have a complete, bootable, copy of my internal drive (Macintosh HD) on an external FireWire partition (Macintosh HDBU). Due to unrepairable directory damage on the internal drive, I booted on the backup and tried to do an erase and copy from the backup drive to the internal. During copy of "music" I got a message, "an error occurred that halted execution". Here is the log file. (first part deleted to meet character limit)

What do I do now? I can send the entire log if that will be helpful, by email.

Well, the message is that there's insufficient space on the destination to hold the source.

If that's not the case (I don't have enough log to tell -- the sizes are at the top of the log for this run), I'd try booting from the appropriate OSX install disc and using Disk Utility (in the Installer application menu) to repair the external drive's structure (NOT PERMISSIONS). Then, boot back to the external and give it another try.

MacHD (target, 74.41 gig capacity), MacHDBU (source, 55.51 gig capacity with only 36.62 gig used) so room should not be a problem. I ran Disk Utility from the DVD and MacHDBU needed no repairs when I "repaired disk".

I then booted from MacHDBU and tried an initial backup with "repair permissions" selected, and Erase and copy selected. It ran for 8min 2 seconds and then had another "halted due to error" message while copying Music. That machine is now "hung up" so I can't forward the log file but will attempt to do so when I can get it working.

Here is the file for the above "halt":

Hope that helps solve the problem

dnanian 07-11-2005 10:15 PM

OK. In this case, there are I/O errors reading the song listed in the log:

/Users/michaelmclane/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Harry Connick, Jr_/Only You/10 My Blue Heaven.aif

So, I'd first try navigating to that song in the Finder, and duplicating it. If that works, delete the original and rename the duplicate back to the original name. Then, empty your trash and try again.

If not, you should delete the file and empty your trash, and then re-import the album (or song).

Many thanks! That did it. Just to be on the safe side I deleted the song completely rather than mess with another round of problems. Things seem to be working well now -- GREAT product, and support!

dnanian 07-12-2005 09:14 AM

Glad that resolved things!
