Drive's "Modified" date not updated by backup?

I haven't seen anybody ask this question so: after I do a (smart) backup, why doesn't the Info window (cmd-I) for the drive TO which I've backed up correctly show the new "Modified" date and time? It's always a day or few in the past. This has been the case for a long time, over three different Macs, multiple versions of SD, three different external HDs (the ones I back up to), and is true whether backing up to a single-partition HD or to one partition of a partitioned drive. I'm not aware that there's anything wrong with the backups, and the logs always show the correct date and time.

We don't take any special steps to "modify" that setting. It might only be updated by Finder.

I have a couple of backup drives I rotate. I usually backup once a month or so (I know, I should do it more often).

So that I know the date of the backup on the drive I have the drive "Backup 2008-02-09" (for a backup done on Feb. 9, etc.).

If I were to use the backup as a startup drive then I would rename the volume to the name of the source drive (in my case, Macintosh HD).

Also, I put a yellow sticky on the drive and record the latest backup date. Pretty high-tech, eh?

Well it's no different to putting the date on food that's in the fridge :D

I also find it confusing to identify which of my two rotating backups. When the "date modified" does not match the date the clone was updated (the date that SuperDuper! was last run). It makes no sense why the dates don't match. Does anyone have an explanation?

Thanks,
Roger
