Geographically Desperate Backups

I'm currently generating local Time Machine backups to an iSCSI target. I want to now backup my machines to a geographically disparate location. I realize I have several options. My plan, as it will, is to establish a router-to-router VPN connection to another site, and then backup to a target machine there. The question that I have is what sort of target should I have remotely that SuperDuper will like the most? I was thinking about a Mac Mini Server with a Drobo attached to it. The other option is to build another Openfiler machine and configure it as an iSCSI target.

What works best?

Well, iSCSI would certainly be the most direct solution, since you'd write directly to the virtualized drive. Likely to be slow, though.

Sure iSCSI may be slow if you are comparing it to USB and/or Firewire however it's 10 times faster than SMB/CIFS. As I understand it, SD will perform incremental backups, yes? So really only the first backup will the be most difficult. Furthermore, I could do the first backup locally on the LAN, and then transport the file server to the geographically disparate location and then just do incrementals from there. Does that make sense?

Yes, that's fine. But I just want to set expectations - I get approximately FW400 speeds locally with iSCSI targets over Gigabit Ethernet... over a WAN/VPN, it's going to be much slower. Whether that will prove reasonable for you is something you're going to have to determine... let us know.

Dave,
Given the alternatives (Mozy, Carbonite, etc.), what choice do I have when it comes to offsite backup, short of physically moving a drive back and forth? Also, if I feel like spending the $335 install fee, my cable company is now offering 101Mbps/15Mbs so while not gigabit, certainly not too shabby.

Understood. That's why I'm saying you can give it a try and see how it works out...

I had an idea. What if I do the Time Machine backup remotely and do the SuperDuper backup locally? Is the SuperDuper backup incremental or is a total dupe each time?

If you use Smart Update, the result is a full copy, but it's made "incrementally".
