Backing up folders & files
 

I'm looking to SuperDuper for backing up select folders and files. Here is my set up and what I would like to do.
HD1 - hard drive on computer
HD2 - external hard drive
HD3 - external hard drive

Backup -
Folder-A on HD2 backs up to HD3
Folder-B, and files 1,2,3 on HD1 back up to HD3

Schedule -
Automatically on a daily basis.

Questions-
1. Will SD recognize file changes within sub-folders of Folder-A and just backup those changes, or, because I'm backing up "Folder-A" does SD see the file change as a change to Folder-A and backup the entire folder again. (Folder-A exceeds 120 GB and I don't want to be backing up the entire folder each time, just the added or changed files.)

2. I have Folder-A with it's sub-folders and files on HD2 backing up to HD3. I also have a different folder on HD3, let's call it Folder-C, that has some of the same files found in Folder-A. When doing the backup, will SD ignore Folder-C or will it see the files in Folder-C and not include those in the backup of Folder-A?

You're going to want to partition HD3 into two volumes, one for each source volume (HD1/HD2).

And, yes, when you Smart Update, the changes are copied (or deleted files removed), whether or not they're in subfolders, if those folders are supposed to be copied.

We wouldn't 'not copy' Folder-C's file just because they're elsewhere in the drive. They'll be copied if they're updated.

So am I understanding correctly that SD is really more for backing up volume to volume rather than individual folders/files?

You can certainly select folders/files to back up (after all, that's what copy scripts do), but you're always copy selected files/folders from one volume to another volume.

It's still not clear to me...
If I backup Folder A from HD1 to HD2, will SD ignore other folders on HD2 which may contain the same files found in Folder A?

No, it will not. And if they're on the same partition, and they're not selected from the source, and you use Smart Update, they'll be removed.

So you can select individual folders/files from the source drive but the target drive has to be a dedicated volume (or partition) to what your backing up. Unfortunately, this is not what I want to do. Should have asked the questions before making the purchase. But thanks for taking the time to answer. I do appreciate your help.

You can also copy to an image on the destination.
