I have an older G4 PowerMac (Sawtooth) running 10.3.9. I'm currently backing up my data (but not the system) onto DVDs or CDs.
Here's my situation: The main drive, containing OSX and 9, is the original 9 GB and nearly maxed out. A second internal drive is 112 GB and contains most of my applications and data; currently about 15 GB. So, there's hardly any room on one and plenty on the other. I want to migrate to 10.4 and am thinking about installing 10.4 on the larger drive (changing it to the start-up) and leaving 9 (and possibly 10.3) on the smaller. I have not yet purchased an external FW/USB drive, but surely will to assist in this transition. I am also soon to receive an additional 512 MB of RAM (for a total of 1.2 GB) and an upgrade to my graphics card.
Can you recommend a strategy for the migration and the sequencing?

I don't know if 10.4 will run on a Sawtooth, but I'd just install it on the larger drive and then use the built-in Migration Assistant to migrate from the 10.3.x partition to the new one.

Dear Dave,
I'm now running 10.4.8 quite well on my old 400 Mhz Sawtooth. Thanks for recommending the Migration Assistant to aid my progress. SuperDuper! worked flawlessly. The forum has given me a wealth of information.
Many thanks,
