Unable to recover from Clone

I don't know what's going on here - this is something I have done many times before with no issues. But now when I need it, it's broken!

I am running 10.6.1 and back up to an external firewire drive.

I've now replaced the HDD in my Mac and want to clone back.

I am booted from my external drive, everything works OK and I can see the "Macintosh HD" in the Finder.

However when I try to clone back I get an error:

Failed to enable ownership on Clone
