Unable to Restore from Sparse Image - Scan error

I can define the sparse image as a source (from external Firewire drive), define the destination and I have also scanned for the image using Disk Utility but Disk Utility comes back with the following error:

"Unable to Scan image _______.__ (Invalid argument).

Its really important I revert back to 10.5 from Snow Leopard

This does not sound good...

(I booted off Snow Leopard DVD)

Rgds,

James
