Network adapters for SD - recommendations?

I've been using SD for quite some time now with a pair of external USB drives with great success.

What I'd like to do is swap one, or even both, drives for network attached drives so I can a) free up USB ports and b) improve backup security by having the external drives located somewhere else in the house.

I'd rather buy a USB to Ethernet adaptor to keep the costs down rather than a whole new drive but if this, or even a dedicated multi bay NAS, are the best options then so be it.

Any advice from someone who's done similar? Any recommendations for SD compatible adapters?

I've tested with the Airport Extreme, which works fine in most of its revisions. The DLink has had problems and successes... it's not an easy thing to do well.

It's been so long, Benson, I don't have details. It was their relatively early USB drive adapter. Firmware updates may have improved things.

No. It's not a real drive...
