OS upgrade

I'm currently on OS 10.4.11 and I need to upgrade to 10.6. Does this sounds like a good plan:
  1. back up using superduper to a Buffalo DriveStation (HD-CE1.0TIU2). Anyone know if this drive is bootable over firewire?
  2. Fresh install of 10.6 on the Imac.
  3. use migration assistant to move the 10.4 data to the new 10.6 install.

Dose this sound like a good plan? Any tips or tricks I should be aware of?

Thanks!

Why not do an upgrade install?

I thought to take advantage of the size reduction of 10.6 I would need to do a fresh install.
