restored HD - alias folders now visible - please help
After backing up my HD (backup all files) to a disc image on an external firewire drive using SD 2.1.3 (running Mac OS 10.4.7), I replaced my internal HD and then restored the contents using the SD disc image that I had created. After restoring the HD data and restarting, my Macintosh HD now shows some additional folders that I have not seen previously, they are alias folders for /tmp, /var, /etc. From what I could find out, these are files that belong to the "private" folder and I am pretty sure that I am not supposed to be able to see them?
Can you please advise? Thanks. DC |

Did you restore with Disk Utility, DC?

I used Disk Utility for restore
I used Disk Utility for the Restore operation.
Probably just because I am not familiar with any alternatives to using Disk Utility for this procedure. Thanks, -DC |

Yes -- this is a well known problem with Disk Utility. It won't hurt anything, though -- those folders just won't be hidden.

I still have the Disk Image -- what other restore utility
Thanks for the fast response, and since I still have the Disk Image that I had created with SD, I would be willing to erase the HD again and Restore using a Utility that does not cause this "well known problem" -- what app do you recommend that I use for this operation?
Thanks again. -- DC |

You'd need to use SD! to do it, if you can... there might be a way to hide them, though, instead. If you search on the Apple Discussion Forums, I'm sure someone has provided a method...

I found an Apple Knowledge Base article that describes a fairly painless way to make those files invisible again, in case any one is interested.
