Yep, I was definitely logged in.
Interestingly, I get the message 'dyld: DYLD_ environment variables being ignored because main executable (/usr/bin/login) is setuid or setgid' every time I open terminal. In researching that message, I discovered that it has been reported to Apple as a bug with Mountain Lion.
