iMac G5 and external USB drive

Hi,

I have an iMac G5 (running OSX 10.4.11) with an 80GB internal drive.
I purchased a 650GB SATA drive as a replacement and I have a USB to SATA
adapter that I can use to connect it to the computer. What I would like
to do is to create a bootable clone using the new USB drive but I read the FAQ
about PowerPC Macs not being able to boot from USB. Can someone
please tell me if it is still possible to clone the drive using the USB adapter,
swap the internal drive out, and then boot from the new one?

Also, I read somewhere that the transfer rate is some on the order of
4Mb/s for a USB connection. Can I expect it to take 5-6hrs then for the
cloning process to complete? The drive is almost completely full.

Thanks for any help you can provide!
