Restore system files only?

My Mac has decided to give me the dreaded No Entry sign on startup so I've started up from my bootable backup drive.

My Mac hard drive still shows up and able to access the information on it but just not start up from it.

Is there, therefore, any way that I can simply copy the system files when restoring from the backup rather than having to do a "Backup - all files"?

The reason I want to do this is that my backup drive is about a week older than my Mac and so there's current work and emails on my Mac - if I restore all files from the Backup then I'll be missing some of my newer files, emails etc.

Any help would be much appreciated.
