SD 2.5 crashing in 10.5.2

2 Attachment(s)
Hello,

Hoping someone can help, and wanted to see if anyone else is seeing this.

Suddenly SD has started to crash upon completion of backup.

As you can see in the SD log the backup does complete, but instead of exiting cleanly I get a crash report.

Using a Logitech mouse?

I am indeed, so I guess this is a known problem?

Now you mention it, I guess it's probably not 10.5.2 as that's been on for a few days, it was only after last nights that I saw the crash...after having installed an MX1000 and drivers.

The Logitech drivers have a hack in it that causes programs to crash. In this case, it's the command we use to put the Mac to sleep that's crashing, so turn that to "Do Nothing" and it should be ok.

Or: use their uninstaller to get rid of their driver(s).

Oh crap. That's a big problem.

I can't stand the mighty mouse, and the MX1000 is awesome.

At the same time I have scheduled backups over night, but don't want the machine to be on all night either for that to happen.

Just going to have to figure something out I suppose.

Won't it go to sleep normally?

edesignuk 02-17-2008 02:40 PM

It will, but then I have to guess how long the backup will take, which obviously depends.

It's a real pain to be honest.

dnanian 02-17-2008 02:43 PM

Sorry if it's a pain: you can uninstall the driver.

You don't have to "force" the Mac to sleep. I'm suggesting just allowing the normal course of things to put the Mac to sleep after the backup (it won't sleep in the middle of one).

Uninstalling the driver pretty much removes the point of having the mouse with all it's extra programmable buttons/functions.

Think I'll just live with the crash report every morning.

Have you considered USB Overdrive?

USB Overdrive is a replacement for third party mouse drivers and joysticks. Here is a link to their web site so you can check it out if you haven't already.

Steer Mouse works well, too...

SD! 2.5; 10.5.2; Logitech MX Laser 1000; USB Overdrive 10.4.8 = crash

SD! 2.5; 10.5.2; G5; Logitech MX Laser 1000; USB Overdrive 10.4.8 = crash

SD! 2.5 has crashed for me also though I have it set to "Do Nothing" on completion and I do not use the Logitech drivers.

Oddly (coincidentally?) it only appears to crash while duping the OS partition.

I backup to an internal and external drive with numerous partitions and in the couple years I've been using SD! as I recall it's alway only crashed while duping the OS partition.

SD! 2.5 has only crashed once though I have used it to backup 6-7 partitions (depending on the HD) around 20 times (not 20 X 6). Not terrible... but disturbing since it was while backing up the main OS.

In previous versions of SD! I also have had to do a hard restart when it crashed while duping the main OS which is why I had stayed using RE for so long.

Hopefully SD! will not continue to do this and that this was just a fluke for some reason that will not happen again.

Ron, if you're getting crashes in SuperDuper, please send me a crash log.

Dave N., et al:

The shear volume of solid advice that appears in this forum constantly amazes me. Thanks to all for the alternatives to the rather cranky Logitech drivers. Installed USB Overdrive 10.4.8 on my MBP 17 C2D 3GB 200GB running 10.5.2 and all is well, including my SD! backups.

Now I can even use all of the programmable keys on the Logitech MX3200 Wireless KB and mouse combo.

All is relatively well in my little corner of the world!
