Snow Leopard Cause Of Problems?

Snow Leopard fails to recognize Pioneer burners. Those with USB connectors can use them.
Could this be connected with the slowness of 2.6.1 with my Firewire hard drives? Both of my Firewire 400 drives are reporting copy speeds of less than a third compared to a few weeks ago.

Well... our general tests have shown that 2.6.1 is slower only in the sense that it's copying more data on a Smart Update than you'd expect. The actual copying shouldn't be significantly slower... but I have no idea, on your system, what might or might not be going on...

This seems to be a problem with a new kernel extension in SL

There's a few discussions on teh Interwebz about this issue which is not apparently confined to the use of SuperDuper!

among others...

Googling "Snow Leopard Slow Firewire" will find more.

A workaround is to replace a SL .kext(s) with the one(s) from 10.5.8

I did this and the copy that took 12 hours  last night seems to be going a lot faster today, should finish in less than an hour or so.

Note that messing about with your system files can cause unintended consequences and if you aren't sure what a kernel extension might be then perhaps you should wait for an official fix...

Yeah, I would be very careful about replacing any FireWire kexts... in general, this is VERY unwise.

claudel 09-23-2009 12:08 PM

Wise advice...

Apparently USB is not affected...

Will a SuperDuper clone made while plugged into a USB port boot when it is plugged into a Firewire port?

dnanian 09-23-2009 12:12 PM

Yes - it doesn't matter what interface you use.

claudel 09-23-2009 12:15 PM

Cool, that might be another workaround...

I'll give it a try later when I get a chance....

claudel 09-23-2009 12:59 PM

Using USB seems to give a much higher Effective copy speed than my firewire does, even with the older extension.

I can't fairly compare total times on two different smart updates...
