Defraging a drive

I have always thought of defraging my HD from time to time and started wondering if I erase my Main drive and use Superduper to copy a backup up copy of my main drive, would this be roughly the same as defraging my main drive? Hope you understand what I mean.

(I changed your post slightly, Cuneyt, just to adjust the URL to the one starting from Shirt Pocket...)

I have had very good experience with iDefrag. It is a small and superb defraging utility, which I came to trust after some desasterous experience with TechTool Pro 4 and Speed Utilities.

Totally agree. And also their customer support is superb.

I have iPartition which came with idefrag lite. Is it worth it going with the full idefrag version. What do I gain buy doing this? More features?

By the way, iPartition is an excellent product. Same goes for their support.

I don't have iPartition and I don't know what options the iDefrag Lite has, but iDefrag has Compact, Metadata, Quick-online, Optimize and Full-defrag options which you can choose for defragmentation. I found that the Metadata option does a very good job to improve speed. Also, the quick-online option which you can defragment only the fragmented files which you can do without unmounting the drive and without having to startup from another drive.

But, I had some problems, technical support invastigated and decided that there's a problem with the OS X and the Western Digital drives (which I have) and not with the software. They reported the problem to Apple and Western Digital, waiting for a solution.
