Crash on sleep after clone
 

Since I've upgraded to 10.4.8 and gotten an 8 gig iPod Nano, I am unable to get SD to get my G5 to sleep after cloning. The clone completes successfully, the machine starts to go to sleep; a few seconds later all the fans start roaring and the thing becomes unresponsive. Very oddly, if I tell SD to just quit or to do nothing after finishing, the machine goes to sleep just fine. The iPod is attached to the hub in my Dell 2005FPW; it may or may not be related to this, but the machine sleeps fine when SD is not involved. It's the old single processor 1.8 ghz G5 with the November 2005 firmware update.

My iBook is also running 10.4.8, but has no attached USB storage devices. It sleeps fine after a clone. An idea where I can look to fix this? Before the 10.4.8 update and the new nano, SD worked perfectly.

No idea, Jo. We simply ask the system to sleep when we're done (basically we use AppleScript to tell the Finder to sleep), so if it's crashing it's the system doing so.

If it goes to sleep fine by itself, I'd suggest simply letting it do so.

Unplugging the Palm TX before seems to fix this issue.

With 10.4.8, there are strange error messages in the system log about a USB device, which only appear if the TX is plugged in. It's like it's trying to enumerate the devices attached to the hub with a view to attaching the TX as a USB storage device of some kind. The TX uses non-volatile memory, but will not mount as a drive, unlike the Palm Life Drive.

The G5 will sleep fine with the TX attached if I'm not running Super Duper, but I've got a usable workaround.

We're really not going to do anything with the TX itself, but it's possible that all the I/O is causing problems for it...
